Practice Areas
Litigation

Gray Broughton is a senior associate in the firm’s Litigation Section, focusing on complex business litigation, mass tort and product liability defense, and white collar criminal defense. In addition, Mr. Broughton has experience representing businesses and individuals in internal and governmental investigations.  Before joining Williams Mullen, Mr. Broughton served four and one-half years as an attorney in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps, leaving the service as a captain.

Bronze Star Medal, for Service during Operation Iraqi Freedom

Representations
  • Currently representing a gasoline refiner in 40 cases nationwide alleging that gasoline with the additive MTBE is a defective product.
  • Defended national bank in class action in Virginia and jury trial in Georgia for breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duty brought by disappointed investors claiming losses in excess of $20 million for the alleged fraudulent business practices and Ponzi scheme of a former bank customer.
  • Defended individuals in the Eastern District of Virginia ("EDVA") charged with federal crimes such as violation of the Clean Water Act, Securities Fraud, Tax Fraud, and various forms of conspiracy.
  • Defended debt collection law firm in class action in EDVA for violation of Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
  • Represented real estate investment group against group’s lender, which was claiming default and pursuing foreclosure. Representation included defending lawsuit, prosecuting counter-claim and seeking temporary injunction.
  • Extensive trial and evidentiary hearing experience in a variety of other civil and criminal matters, including detention hearings, grand jury investigations and felony trials.
