What is a rotation?
Attorneys in each of Williams Mullen's offices are placed in small work groups based on their practice concentrations. Summer associates rotate through different groups. The summer associate's rotation is determined primarily by his or her legal interests and the hiring needs of the groups. A rotation period will range from two to four weeks depending on each office's needs. One attorney will act as the summer associate's supervisor for each rotation.
How many hours do summer clerks work?
Williams Mullen expects its summer associates to work in conjunction with each office's operational business hours. Supervising attorneys monitor summer associates' workloads to keep their productivity within this expectation. Summer associates receive both billable and non-billable work. Billable work includes drafting memoranda, client letters and other documents and compiling client research. Non-billable work includes attending client conferences, closings and firm-produced educational seminars. Summer associates do not have billable requirements although, when appropriate, clients are billed for their time.
What will I be expected to know when beginning the summer program? (Skills, qualities, recommended classes to prepare for summer.)
The attorneys at Williams Mullen recognize that summer associates generally do not have extensive experience with the subject matters of the firm's various practice areas. As a result, attorneys who assign work to summer associates provide them with the necessary substantive background to complete projects. Summer associates are nevertheless expected to work hard and use the general legal skills, such as analytical thinking and research, which they have learned in their first-year and/or second-year law school classes.
How do summer clerks receive feedback?
Summer associates attach an evaluation sheet to each finished project, and the assigning attorney completes this evaluation. A Recruiting Committee contact, assigned to each summer associate, facilitates the feedback process from all attorneys throughout the summer associate's stay with Williams Mullen.
