McLean, Va. – WMACCA presents "Anatomy of an Attorney General Investigation," featuring former Attorney General of Virginia
Jerry Kilgore and his former chief counsel,
Christopher Nolen, as guest speakers. Kilgore and Nolen will provide an overview of the office of the Attorney General and how it functions in different states, as well as insights into how to best deal with Attorneys General as they investigate, evaluate, and bring claims against corporations. The program is scheduled for Thursday, May 4, 2006, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner.
Attorneys General serve as the head of their state's department of law and advise state agencies on all legal matters. In this role, they deal with consumer protection, antitrust, securities regulation, fraud in state government contracting, environmental regulation, and many other areas that affect corporate citizens of the state. National headlines demonstrate that state Attorneys General are exercising their powers to regulate any type of business that affects consumers and are becoming active in the industries they target and the issues they pursue. As a result, businesses need new strategies for responding to regulators and consumer advocates.
Kilgore and Nolen bring unique perspectives to the discussion based on their prior experience. They will share their first-hand involvement with investigations as well as their knowledge of the inner workings of the office of Attorney General and the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), the leading "collective action" organization in the United States, which has been responsible for many high-profile consumer-protection claims and settlements.
Jerry Kilgore is a partner in and chair of William Mullen's multistate corporate compliance and public policy group. His practice focuses on state and governmental relations and litigation and he advises clients from the formation of a business to complex governmental issue regulation. As the former Attorney General of Virginia, he oversaw the relationship between the office and the business community, including consumer issues,
qui tam investigations, pharmaceutical issues, and environmental inquiries.
Christopher Nolen is a partner in Williams Mullen's multistate corporate compliance and public policy group. His practice focuses on representing clients before Attorneys General nationally and before state legislatures. He has experience in drafting legislation, coordinating legislative strategies, lobbying and public relations, and, in particular, crisis management communications. In his prior capacity as chief legal and legislative advisor to the Attorney General, Mr. Nolen supervised the development of legal and legislative policy within the office and worked with agency attorneys to conduct legal proceedings in a manner consistent with the Attorney General's philosophical views.
